History
More than 50 years ago, the idea for a holiday park in the beautiful forests of Twente was born. Albert and Annie Nieuwenhuis started building the first four cottages on a plot of 7,000 square meters in 1964. In 1960s terms, the cottages were luxuriously furnished. All with their own shower and toilet. The following year, in the winter of 1965, the official opening was celebrated. Eureka was a fact.
The years that followed were marked by many changes. In 1967, electricity was installed and the oil lamps were a thing of the past. In 1972, natural gas followed and in 1984, the houses were connected to the sewer. In the meantime, the park was expanded further and further. New land was purchased and new houses were built. At that time, this was still quite cheap, only 4,000 guilders each.
In 1990 it was time for the takeover. Remi Nieuwenhuis, one of the 5 children of Albert and Annie, became the new owner. Now, decades later, he is still at the head of Eureka, together with his wife Monique Nieuwenhuis. The park has grown into a luxury holiday park with 55 forest villas. There is a new reception, several play areas have been built and there are still plenty of plans for the future.
Modern yet authentic!
The name Eureka
Eureka - A Dutch exclamation when you find something you've been looking for, for a long time. In other words: 'I found it!'
Now you might be thinking: "Eureka? Why that name?" This name has its origins in the early years of the park. One of the first visitors, a family from The Hague, arrived for a holiday. They had had a long journey, were tired and ready for some rest. The moment they got out, the fresh air of nature hit them. They heard birds singing and saw that this was indeed a perfect place for a relaxing holiday. At that moment, the gentleman from The Hague shouted: Eureka!
